Common questions
What is SMC?
Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) is extra VA pay on top of regular disability for severe service-connected conditions. Authorized by 38 USC 1114.
Can SMC-K stack with my regular pay?
Yes. SMC-K is a flat add-on for loss/loss of use of one body part. Each one you've lost adds another SMC-K bonus.
What's the difference between SMC and TDIU?
SMC is for severe physical conditions. TDIU is for when you can't work due to service-connected conditions. They can apply together. Use the TDIU eligibility checker to see if you qualify.
What SMC level qualifies for Aid & Attendance?
SMC-L is the entry level for Aid & Attendance, covering veterans who need help with daily activities such as dressing, bathing, or feeding. SMC-R1 and R2 cover higher care needs including skilled nursing. Each level has a defined 2026 monthly rate calculated by this tool.
