Frequently asked

Where do the 2026 numbers come from?

We start with the VA's 2025 rates and add the 2.8% raise (the COLA), set by Social Security based on the cost of living. When the VA puts out the final 2026 tables, we'll swap in those exact numbers. See the full methodology.

Do I pay taxes on VA disability pay?

No. VA disability pay is tax-free. You don't pay federal income tax on it, and most states don't tax it either. See our state tax tool for details on your state.

What is the "bilateral factor"?

If you have a service-connected rating on both sides of your body for the same body part, both knees, both hips, both shoulders, both ankles, both hands, both ears, both eyes, both lungs, or any other paired limb or organ, the VA gives you a 10% bonus on those combined ratings before folding them into the rest. Per 38 CFR 4.26, it applies to any paired body part, not just knees. Our disability calculator auto-detects bilateral pairs when you enter left and right ratings.

What's the difference between SMC and TDIU?

SMC (Special Monthly Compensation) is extra pay on top of your regular VA disability for very serious injuries. TDIU (Individual Unemployability) pays at the 100% rate when you can't work, even if your combined rating is lower.

Is VetBenefitHub run by the VA?

No. We're not the VA. We're not lawyers, and we don't sell anything. For free help with a claim, talk to a Veterans Service Officer (VSO). You can find one on the VA's official VSO search page.
